Sound Pure's Take
The Neve 1073 OPX is what happens when one of the most iconic mic preamp designs ever made gets reimagined for the way modern studios actually work.
At its heart, the OPX is still unmistakably a 1073. It delivers the warmth, low-mid authority, and musical harmonic character that made the original a studio legend. Sources come through sounding bigger, more confident, and more finished, whether you're tracking vocals, drums, guitars, bass, or an entire band. The classic Neve DNA is very much intact.
What makes the OPX special, though, is that it isn't trying to be a museum piece. Instead of giving you one or two channels of vintage flavor, it packs eight channels of 1073-inspired preamplification into a compact 2U chassis, making it incredibly practical for modern tracking sessions. Whether you're recording a full drum kit, a live ensemble, or building out a high-end hybrid studio, having eight channels of Neve character available at once is a game-changer.
The remote-control functionality is another huge advantage. Being able to control gain, phantom power, routing, and other settings directly from software feels surprisingly natural once you start using it. It brings the convenience of modern workflows without sacrificing the sound that made engineers fall in love with Neve gear in the first place.
Sonically, we appreciate that the OPX maintains the punch and presence associated with classic Neve designs while offering improved consistency and lower noise performance. It captures the spirit of the original without forcing you to deal with the limitations of vintage hardware.
The DI inputs are excellent as well. Bass, synths, and keyboards benefit from the same sense of depth and solidity that makes the microphone inputs so appealing, making the OPX just as useful during production and overdub sessions as it is during initial tracking.
What we love most about the 1073 OPX is that it bridges two worlds exceptionally well. It has the sound that engineers have trusted for decades, but it's built for studios that demand recall, connectivity, scalability, and efficiency.
For engineers looking for a way to bring genuine Neve character into a modern recording environment without sacrificing workflow, the 1073 OPX is one of the smartest and most practical evolutions of the classic 1073 concept we've seen.
From AMS Neve
The AMS Neve 1073OPX brings the legendary sound of the classic Neve 1073 microphone preamp into a modern, multi-channel format designed for today's recording, broadcast, and live production environments. Housed in a compact 2U rackmount chassis, the 1073OPX delivers eight channels of authentic Neve preamplification with extensive remote-control capabilities and flexible studio integration.
Each channel features the renowned Neve 1073 sound, utilizing Marinair-style transformer-coupled microphone inputs and Class A circuitry to deliver the warmth, depth, low-mid punch, and musical harmonic character that have made the 1073 one of the most sought-after preamp designs in recording history. With up to 70 dB of gain available, the 1073OPX is equally capable of handling low-output ribbon microphones, condenser microphones, dynamic microphones, and direct instrument sources.
Designed for modern workflows, the 1073OPX includes comprehensive remote-control software that provides access to gain, phantom power, pad, polarity reverse, impedance selection, filtering, routing, and recall functions. Multiple units can be controlled simultaneously, allowing users to manage up to 64 channels of remote-controlled Neve preamplification from a single interface.
Connectivity is equally versatile, with front-panel microphone, line, and Class A DI inputs for convenient access, along with rear-panel microphone and line connections via DB25 for permanent studio installations. Each channel includes switchable 48V phantom power, a 25 dB pad, polarity reverse, an 80 Hz high-pass filter, and selectable input impedance for optimizing performance with a wide range of microphones and sources.
An integrated stereo monitor path, front-panel headphone output, and latency-free monitoring capabilities make the 1073OPX a complete front-end solution for tracking and production applications. Optional digital expansion cards add USB, ADAT, or Dante connectivity with premium AD/DA conversion up to 192 kHz, allowing the unit to function as a high-performance audio interface or networked audio device.
Designed and manufactured in England, the 1073OPX combines the unmistakable sound of a studio classic with the flexibility, recall, and scalability demanded by modern recording environments. Whether used for tracking full bands, recording orchestral sessions, expanding an existing interface, or building a high-end hybrid studio, the 1073OPX delivers authentic Neve tone across eight channels in a streamlined, contemporary format.
