Sound Pure's Take
Handcrafted in Austin, Texas, the Collings 001 is a boutique small-bodied acoustic that delivers rich harmonic depth, focused projection, and effortless playability. Featuring an old-growth Sitka spruce top paired with Honduran mahogany back and sides, its voice is reinforced by pre-war scalloped Sitka X-bracing for quick response and surprising volume out of a 00 body. Weighing a lightweight 3 lbs 12 oz, it features a comfortable Modified V Honduran mahogany neck with a wider 1 13/16" bone nut, a 14"–26" compound radius ebony fingerboard, an ebony pyramid bridge, and a short 24 7/8" scale length. Styled with tortoise binding, a walnut backstrip, nickel Waverly tuners, and a high-gloss finish, this custom-spec 00 comes complete with a deluxe hardshell case.
From Collings Guitars
We offer the 00 in its original 12-fret configuration (click here for our 14-fret version), a guitar shape that was first designed around the time of the Civil War. Its dimensions are similar to a typical classical guitar, with a slotted headstock and small pyramid bridge. The comfortable size and timeless appearance of the Collings 00 is matched by the ease of playing a wide neck and shorter string scale affords. The tone is typically balanced and precise, and we’ve seen it adopted for a wide range of playing styles from simple vocal accompaniment to ragtime solos. When you want the durability of a modern guitar but one that appears rooted in an earlier, simpler time, the 00 is a versatile choice.
001 vs 002H vs 003
While all three models share the same body dimensions, key differences are outlined below.
Our 1-style (001) features Honduran mahogany back and sides with tortoise body binding and ebony butt wedge, b/w/b/w top purfling, a walnut backstrip, dot fingerboard inlays, and a simpler 1-style rosette.
Our 2-style (002H) features East Indian rosewood back and sides with ivoroid body binding and butt wedge, herringbone top purfling, a “zipper” backstrip, diamonds and squares fingerboard inlays, and a more intricate 2-style rosette.
Our 3-style (003) features East Indian rosewood back and sides with ivoroid body/fingerboard/peghead binding and butt wedge, no herringbone top purfling, a “chevron” backstrip, no fingerboard inlays, and an abalone rosette.
Standard (001) vs Traditional (001 T)
While both models share the same body dimensions, key differences are outlined below.
Our standard series instruments (non-T) offer the classic Collings voice, which features shimmery highs, a punchy midrange, a tight and clean low end, and maximum headroom with a quick response. The standard neck profile is our Modified V with 1 13/16″ nut width and 2 5/16″ string spacing. Standard instruments also offer a wider range of custom options than Traditionals.
Our Traditional series instruments (T) offer a slightly looser, more “broken in” feel and tone, featuring a rounder high end and fuller low midrange, along with our Traditional aesthetic appointments, such as gold MOP inlays and custom wood purflings and rosette. Traditional models also feature an ultra-thin nitrocellulose lacquer body finish, abbreviated soundboard graft (tongue brace), and a unique neck construction designed to complement the looser feel and voicing, along with our Traditional neck carve and 1 3/4″ nut width. Due to the vintage-inspired vision for these guitars, Traditional instruments are offered with limited custom options.
