From Empirical Labs

A pair of Empirical Labs PUMP Classic Knee Compressor Modules mounted horizontally in a single-rackspace Wave Distro Powergrid Duo enclosure.

"The PUMP delivers the sound of our flagship Distressor® at half the price," said Empirical Labs President Dave Derr. “Plus, it even has some features that the Distressor doesn’t have, such as stepped Attack and Release controls for precise recall and manually syncing two PUMPs, the popular AtMod feature from our Arousor® plugin, a large user-friendly bargraph meter, and up to 10dB quieter operation. Now, there’s the PUMP Duo for stereo and dual-mono applications.”

The PUMP is a fully analog single-channel compressor that shares family DNA with the legendary Distressor compressor, along with select features from the Arousor compressor plugin and the Mike-e microphone preamp. The PUMP offers eight compression ratios from 2:1 to 20:1 (each with an optimized curve), digitally stepped Attack and Release controls, a Detector high-pass filter, soft-saturation clipping, and comprehensive gain-reduction metering.

The PUMP also boasts the unique Attack Modification or AtMod control originally introduced in the Arousor plugin and unavailable on any other hardware compressor. AtMod enables users to shape transient response beyond simply adjusting the Attack control, allowing more transients to pass for greater impact—such as adding a bit more snap to snares or thump to basses.

All Empirical Labs products are designed, manufactured, and assembled in the U.S.

The PUMP Duo is one of several Wave Distro Powergrid Duo 500 Series products. The Powergrid Duo features recessed slots that enable two 500 Series modules to be flush mounted for a clean look, and provides XLR inputs and outputs.

Whether used in stereo or dual-mono applications, the PUMP Duo provides two renowned Empirical Labs compressors in an elegant unit at an attractive price.

  • Frequency Response – 5 Hz to 175 kHz (-3dB points).
  • Dynamic Range – 125 dB from maximum output (.5%THD soft clipping) to minimum output. Noise floor with Output on 0 is typically – 101dBu.
  • Distortion – between .0035% and 15% at 1KHz, depending on mode and settings.
  • I/O – Maximum Input before hard clipping – +22dBm, “ Line In” mode. Maximum Output (Mix at 0) – +28.5dBm
  • Impedance – 120k Ohm, Instrument In Mode, output impedance is less than 75 ohms.  20K input impedance in balanced Line in mode.
  • Compressor Time Constants – Attack: 200µs to 40ms. Release: 50ms to 500ms, plus Opto setting. Stereo Linkable for stereo tracks.
  • Detector HP Filter – Switchable, fixed at 110Hz
  • Attack Modification (AtMod) – Slows the initial onset of the attack envelope allowing more transient back into the track.
  • Saturation Soft Clipper – based on the same circuit found in the Mike-E CompSat section.
